MAUREEN NOLLETTE

STATEMENT

"Almost all the artifacts that we value as a society were made by or at the order of men. But behind every one is an invisible infrastructure of labor — primarily caregiving, in its various aspects — that is mostly performed by women."
– Debbie Chachra

Deconstructing societal norms regarding labor’s worth has been instrumental in shaping my work. I create installations, drawings, and sculpture that questions our existing infrastructure that insinuates debased gender and labor stereotypes. Through process, pattern, repetition, and grids my work functions as a political and ontological collection of personal experience navigating this terrain.

My work is informed by history, culture, the passage of time, and the poetry of daily life. Material choices run a breadth from collected artifacts to mass-produced goods all associated with familial dwellings. These materials transcend their perceived function through placement and application. Seemingly frivolous materials are often intentionally positioned for intimate, careful consideration.

As a woman making work in the context of third wave feminism, I intentionally place my work between craft and art. Organized in series, the work is sensual, subtle, and political in any combination.

PROFILE

Maureen Nollette is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice encompasses installation, drawing, and sculpture. Nollette pairs the measured regularity of the grid with handmade work that is implicitly labor-intensive allowing for imperfection. Her work challenges the stereotypes of gendered approaches to labor, or “women’s work.” This critique is instrumental in shaping her work.

Nollette’s work has been shown internationally and is held in public collections including Detroit Institute of Art Museum, Yves St. Laurent, MGM Mirage Hotel, j.jill Group, in addition to private collections.

Nollette has given lectures at School of Visual Arts in NY, Kendall College of Art & Design in MI, and Grand Rapids Art Museum in MI to name a few. She was a Curatorial Board member at Urban Institute of Contemporary Art; thrice a Juror for Scholastic’s Art Awards; curatorial projects include (a)wake, a group show for Women’s History Month and LIMIT(less) at Urban Institute of Contemporary Art. She has a residency at Marble House Project scheduled for September 2016.

Nollette is adjunct faculty member at Kendall College of Art & Design. She holds a MFA from Queens College of the City University of New York, NY; BFA from Kansas City Art Institute, MO; and a Bachelor of Journalism Degree from University of Nebraska, NE.
