ArtPrize artist duo Mary Sebastian and Carol Masselink ‘open’ a huge piece of burled bog ash
This unplanned collaboration between Mary and Carol began with the procuring of the wood from an amazing natural bog within the city. Trudging through the bog, armed with mosquito repellant and a chain saw, their process began. With considerable difficulty, but enduring determination, they managed to release and lift the wood from its water-logged fate.
Due to its size and intricacies they decided to design the piece together. At first it was mutually decided to work on the piece from each end and meet in the middle. They quickly realized that this piece of wood could only be ‘opened’ by working side-by-side. It was then that “Sentinel Torch” began to emerge. The finished product being a labor of love and creation between these two artists.
