GRAND RAPIDS – “Peripheral Vision” emphasizes the expansiveness of landscapes both familiar and foreign in the exaggerated formats of local artists Christina Hahn and Clay Stauffer.  Hahn and Stauffer wrap up the spring season at LaFontsee Galleries with their most recent landscape paintings, exploring our relationship with the physical world around us.

Hahn is passionate about capturing the expansive space where land meets water and water meets sky -- that feeling of smallness in the midst of a vast, open space.  She continues to explore this theme with freshness and enthusiasm in her paintings of the Lake Michigan shore. Underneath her brushstrokes is intriguing evidence of the opposite: vast areas captured in the intricate lines of topographical maps.

Stauffer takes advantage of an exaggerated, panoramic format to explore our movement through the built environment in his paintings of the southern United States, eastern France, and northern Thailand. He masters the key elements of a painter’s vocabulary – color, shape, and edge – in a body of work alive with the push and pull of cool and warm, near and far, soft and sharp.

“Peripheral Vision” will open on Friday, May 16th, 2008 with a reception from 5:00 – 8:30 pm.  Meet the artists and view additional work on Saturday, May 17th from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm.  The exhibition will run through June 27th.
