GRAND RAPIDS – LaFontsee Galleries opens its 2008 season with “Luminosity: Fehsenfeld & Huang”, a two-person exhibition showcasing two of West Michigan’s most dedicated artists: Carolyn Fehsenfeld and David Huang.  “Carolyn Fehsenfeld’s ability to paint any subject matter combined with David Huang’s ability to consistently challenge the limits of design creates a synergy that is both visually pleasing and progressive,” says Scott LaFontsee, who owns LaFontsee Galleries with his wife Linda.

Carolyn Fehsenfeld’s loose and lively oil paintings capture a variety of subject matter including figures, still lifes, landscapes, and cityscapes.  The beauty of the everyday is captured in unexpected skylines, crowded street scenes, figures in motion, and the quiet corner of a solitary room.  “While Carolyn’s work is well known throughout West Michigan, her accomplishments far exceed her recognition as a significant painter,” explains LaFontsee.  Fehsenfeld’s work is included in museum, corporate, and countless personal collections throughout Michigan and the Great Lakes Region.

David Huang has enjoyed a successful career as a fine craft artist.  His unique hammered metal vessels have gained national recognition within art and fine craft communities.  “David’s craftsmanship is astounding,” says LaFontsee.  “The patience it takes to hammer a vessel from a flat piece of metal is nothing short of impressive.  David has quickly become a ‘rock star’ within the metalworking community.”  Huang takes a more modest approach to his work, saying, “This work is about things I treasure; the natural sensual world, skilled labor, timeless beauty, and the inner spirit.”

“Luminosity: Fehsenfeld & Huang” will open Friday, January 11, 2008 with a reception at the gallery from 5:30 – 8:30 pm.  The exhibition will run through February 15th.
