Celebrating Cyril Lixenberg!
Gallery Exhibition runs September 14th – October 19th
Opening Reception and Meet the Artist, September 14th from 2pm to 7pm
GRAND RAPIDS – LaFontsee Galleries’ exhibition of the internationally acclaimed, British-born Dutch artist Cyril Lixenberg celebrates his growing presence in West Michigan and the beginning of the relationship between the artist and the gallery.
“Celebrating Cyril Lixenberg!” presents an impressive portion of Lixenberg’s oeuvre of work, which is well known and celebrated throughout Europe, particularly in the Netherlands. Lixenberg has exhibited extensively in major museums and galleries, as well as completed countless commissions, filling squares, dikes, offices, public buildings, and even entire cities across Europe with his geometric masterpieces.
In conjunction with the unveiling of Lixemberg’s sculpture Steel Water, the exhibition at LaFontsee Galleries will showcase a variety of small sculptures and prints. The exhibition also includes a miniature, limited edition replica of Steel Water, the 33-ft. sculpture Lixenberg was commissioned to create by the Fluoride Commemorative Committee to mark Grand Rapids’ place in history as the first city in the world to fluoridate their public water supply. Lixenberg, who has completed sculptural commissions for the Holland Community Hospital and Grand Valley State University, will unveil Steel Water in downtown Grand Rapids on the morning of September 14th, the same day “Celebrating Cyril Lixenberg!” opens to the public at LaFontsee Galleries.
As an artist, Lixenberg’s work focuses on the relationship of positive and negative space. His hard-edge sculptures, which are mainly constructed from stainless steel, painted metal, or acrylic, are often created in sets of inversed forms, flip-flopping what is positive space and what is negative space in each sculpture. Lixenberg’s bold, graphic prints play with the same ideas. His use of silk screen allows him to work with sharply defined planes and colors, making it easy to invert these elements from one print to the next.
Show opening and artist reception will be held from 2pm – 7pm, Friday, September 14th at LaFontsee Galleries, located at 820 Monroe Ave. NW, Grand Rapids, MI. The exhibition will be on view at the gallery until October 19th.
