After a national search, Helen DeVos Children's Hospital selected Grand Rapids-based LaFontsee Galleries as the art consultant for its new 14-floor hospital. The hospital opened on January 11, 2011.
LaFontsee Galleries was responsible for providing and framing all artwork for the new hospital. This project was unique not only in scale, but in focus. The hospital was to feature artwork made by children, for children. To accomplish his, we partnered with our community, local children’s organizations and artists to create children's art specifically for the $286 million building.
The project took nearly two years and involved nine thousand local children. Over two thousand pieces of artwork now hang in the hospital. LaFontsee Galleries also oversaw the creation of the major art pieces in the lobby and garden, including the 160 foot Happiness Is mural. Special projects also included custom vinyl graphics which have transformed the CT and MRI machines and rooms.
It has been a great joy and privilege to be part of this project.
