Tony Rōkō • Profile

Tony Roko

Tony Rōkō’s dazzling images are created from repurposed industrial and architectural materials. “I find inspiration in the balance between creating art and preserving the innate history of salvaged materials,” he explains. “These ever-changing variables force a fresh perspective for each new piece, while ensuring my personal growth as an artist.”

A self-taught artist, Rōkō has many years’ experience painting in automotive plants.  This unlikely combination of art and industry yields a style unique to Rōkō.  With masterful technique and bold color choices, Rōkō uses a variety of mediums to create stylized figures, bursting with energy and urban sensibility.

Rōkō experiments with materials, repurposing boards and scraps, using their texture while applying acrylics, oils, varnishes, stains and urethanes. The balance of transforming industrial materials while acknowledging and allowing natural patinas to be present in the work is a challenge that changes with each piece. This process allows the inherent history to add depth and meaningful purpose to the work beyond the image alone.

Tony Rōkō • Statement

As the first-born American in my family, language was a barrier from early on. I learned that spoken language is not always necessary to communicate and that messages can be conveyed without words. I became fascinated with the visual diversity of life's many subjects and how they spoke to me. I've often felt that I could identify with the most subtle expressions and mannerisms. Even from a photograph, I feel connected to subjects and find myself trying to communicate that experience. Expressing these visions has become an integral part of my life. My hope is that the viewer will feel that they can read into my subjects and experience the same connection that I had with what originally inspired me.
