Artist Spotlight - Missy Morrow

Missy Morrow • Profile

Missy Morrow plans each piece from background to foreground, striking a balance by leaving certain areas to develop organically as technique and process dictate.  Vintage wallpaper and mechanical drawings, vellum and untreated plywood are her materials of choice.  She works representationally in acrylic paint, depicting birds, flowers, and recreational subjects such as bicycles, sailboats, or a cup of tea.  Her paintings set up whimsical scenes that tell stories and capture pleasant moments, refreshing and uplifting the viewer.

Missy Morrow studied chemistry at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI and went on to complete a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Illustration from Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids, MI.

Missy Morrow • Statement

I love to paint and draw birds. They have so much personality. Compare the intense power of swans chasing geese from the nesting grounds to the flitting titmouse on the feeder next to the kitchen window to the silent and mysterious herons that occasionally fly overhead only to land in the fen just out of sight. They represent a freedom that we all catch a glimpse of every once in a while. Being alive, it’s a good thing.

I studied Graphic Illustration at the Center for Creative Studies and am currently pursuing fine art painting. My acrylic work has recently been displayed in exhibitions at the Grand Rapids Arts Museum, the Holland Arts Council, and the Muskegon Museum of Art.
