Missy Morrow • Profile

Missy Morrow

Missy Morrow is a West Michigan illustrator and fine artist whose work is currently represented by Lafontsee Galleries in Grand Rapids and Douglas, Michigan. She is a self taught painter winning awards prior to returning to school to achieve a BFA in Illustration from Kendall College of Art and Design. Along with painting every day, she also teaches Mixed Media Illustration at Kendall using both Traditional and Digital Media. Prior to devoting her life full time to her art, Missy was a coatings engineer working in the manufacturing sector for 17 years, 8 of those years being at Herman Miller. Her engineering discipline shows in how prolific she is with her work. Her design experience is evident in her ability to control color and the compositional simplicity in her work. While her artistic influences are almost too many to be named name and always changing, a few have stayed constant such as Bernie Fuchs, Early 20th Century Japanese Woodcuts, and  the WPA Artist’s work most important being the National Parks Posters. Missy wants her work to be thought provoking yet not condescending to the viewer. “It is important to me that my work is enjoyable and allows the viewer a moment’s respite from worldly anxieties, as they can be overwhelming at times. I want my understanding and use of design, color and subject matter to leave them with a feeling of calm and wellbeing. My subject matters range from birds in nature to the nostalgic with vintage bicycles and wallpaper patterns, often times putting the two together. I want my work to bring simplicity to an often cluttered world.”

Missy Morrow • Statement

I love to paint and draw birds. They have so much personality. Compare the intense power of swans chasing geese from the nesting grounds to the flitting titmouse on the feeder next to the kitchen window to the silent and mysterious herons that occasionally fly overhead only to land in the fen just out of sight. They represent a freedom that we all catch a glimpse of every once in a while. Being alive, it’s a good thing.
I studied Graphic Illustration at the Center for Creative Studies and am currently pursuing fine art painting. My acrylic work has recently been displayed in exhibitions at the Grand Rapids Arts Museum, the Holland Arts Council, and the Muskegon Museum of Art.
