Megan Klco • Profile

Megan Klco

Megan Klco uses paint as paint.  Almost sculptural, her paintings on canvas involve translucent layering of oil paint in a way that distances the viewer from the actual image.  She deliberately chooses subjects and spaces lacking in clarity, obscuring her perception of the image through windshields and window frames. As she travels through the cityscape, she carefully edits the visual information given to the viewer as she paints, evoking a response of slight confusion and curiosity.  While she begins a painting with an image in mind, she rarely refers to it, with no clear end in view.

Megan Klco earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in studio art from Truman State University in Kirksville, MO, and her Master of Fine Arts degree in painting from Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids, MI.  Klco continues to emerge as one of LaFontsee Galleries’ most sought-after artists.  A Michigan native, her paintings are rooted in her impressions of day-to-day experiences in Grand Rapids.

Megan Klco • Statement

I paint the world out my windows – its lights, its colors, its shapes.  I am interested in how I establish a sense of place in my local environment, and I use painting as an exploratory tool.  Every day the light casts different colors on my neighborhood.  Begun from life, my paintings likewise change and abstract.  I paint over what I did yesterday in response to my new environment.  Through layering and revision, the surface becomes its own landscape with its own sediment and history.

Ultimately, I am trying to excavate the colors, shapes and textures that represent “home” for me.

My world doesn’t have to be beautiful, and yet it is.
That is the motivating miracle.
