Marianna Heule • Profile

Marianna Heule

Marianna Heule was born and raised in the Netherlands in the province of South Holland. Following her education she worked for four years in broadcasting and after her marriage in 1979, moved to Grand Rapids, MI.

While raising their two sons, Marianna started to pursue a career in fine art. This journey took her to numerous classes in drawing, pastel and oil painting as well as classes in portraiture, figure, landscape and plein air painting. In addition to these studies she attended workshops from artists such as Bill Hosner, Carolyn Anderson, Kim English and other accomplished American painters. Since 2008 she attends, during the winter season, the Scottsdale Artist School in Arizona to further her education.

Marianna feels connected to the land and enjoys painting harvest scenes, the human figure at work and farm animals, especially draft horses. Plein air painting for her is more than capturing a scene; it is an experience that gives her joy. The studio enables her to work on intricate scenes that require more time and attention. Marianna mostly works in pastel on sanded paper. In addition to painting in the U.S.A. she has also painted in France and in the Netherlands. Her paintings have been awarded multiple times, her paintings are available at LaFontsee Gallery/Underground Studio in Grand Rapids. Marianna teaches plein air classes at Franciscan Process Life Center. She lives together with her husband Rinck and their two dogs, on a horse farm in Rockford, MI.

Marianna Heule • Statement

Painting is my joy, my passion. Whenever I paint and that certain joy starts growing within me, I know the painting will meet my expectations. I do not need to travel far to find inspiration, but I want to be prepared whenever a painting presents itself. I want to capture a scene as it allows itself to be captivated.

I believe I was born with a desire to paint, but I understand that painting demands dedication, study, and practice. The more I understand, the more I can improvise. The more skillfully I can draw, the more I can allow shapes and shades to flow freely.

A good painting slows the clock, makes a fleeting moment of beauty last a little longer, and brings a sense of security, unity, and inner peace. A good painting, therefore, is worth sharing with others.
