"Artists in Action: Bring Your Painting to the People", Professional Artist

Kathy Mohl • Profile

Kathy Mohl

Driven to paint what is unseen, Kathy Mohl creates a place for the viewer to step inside and allow the soul to wander. Influenced by places that stir the senses, she is drawn to environments that cause her to stop and stare: powerful places where the distance between heaven and earth seems to disappear. As an artist, she believes that our surroundings can shape our thoughts and art can open our minds. Less concerned with realistic representation and more concerned with an expressive quality through the use of color, value, and composition, Mohl aims to paint what is unseen- the feeling of a place rather than a representation of it.

Mohl paints on-site in oil and pastel, which she describes as causing her to get out of her own way and make quick choices about what to leave in and what to leave out. “I believe I'll always be inspired by nature and my love for plein air painting will never end”, she says.

Born in Youngstown, Ohio, Kathy Mohl has studied and practiced art throughout her life. She attended Oberlin College and Kent State University, majoring in Graphic Design and Illustration. She has been exhibiting in galleries and juried exhibitions for over 12 years and her work is included in many private and corporate collections.

Kathy Mohl • Statement

My work is inspired by light, nature and the power of place. I am driven to paint what is unseen, to create a place for the soul to wander. There is a spiritual element present in our surroundings, a gentle mystery and powerful energy that I wish to express and share with the viewer. Light itself is often the subject of my work, even the light of a gray day. Light can transform any place into a "thin-space" where the distance between heaven and earth seems to disappear.

Being an artist is a life-long commitment. The more you work at it, the more it reveals to you. There is always more to learn. We are all searching. Without intention, my paintings often seem to ask questions. What is around that bend? Where does that path lead? What is beyond? These are questions we all have as we go through life. Looking outside often helps with what we have going on inside. Plein air painting forces me to get out of my own way and make quick choices about what to leave in and what to leave out. In many ways they are more truthful paintings based on experience and creative instinct. Standing back - taking the long view - sometimes that is when we see things more clearly.
