Jill Worm • Profile

Jill Worm

Inspired by her love of nature and her affinity for vibrant color, Jill Worm’s simplified landscape forms capture the mood of the day and a sense of place.

Worm begins painting in oil outdoors in order to capture her initial impressions before returning to the studio and working in a larger scale on canvas.  She may depart from her original references, working in more intense color, and ranges in her application from glazing to scumbling and layering with the palette knife.  Ideas emerge in the studio, and the painting process often takes its own direction, resulting in an abstracted swaths of color even slightly cubist-style compositions.

Jill Worm grew up in Wisconsin, and studied at the Chicago Art Institute, the Evanston Art Center, and the International School of Drawing and Painting in Italy.  She began a careen in fashion, and has carried her experience and the components of color, design and composition into her paintings.

Jill Worm • Statement

My paintings are inspired by a passion for nature and for color. I am captivated by the light and its effect on the landscape forms. I start with observation and use an expanded palette of colors to convey a modern perspective.

I enjoy painting outdoors experiencing nature –feeling the wind in the trees, listening to the bird songs, observing the wildlife, and watching the light change. I work to capture this feeling of the day and sense of place.

The direct observation in these plein air paintings is a springboard to the studio works in which I use more vibrant color and more abstract compositions. In the studio I am also able to work on a much larger scale.

All of my paintings are oil on canvas and range from thin veils of color to heavier paint application with the palette knife. The majority of my work focuses on the landscape, but since I live in the city I am also intrigued by the architectural forms surrounding me and continue to paint scenes from my neighborhood and the L platforms.
