Ann Chuchvara

Tracing paper, thread, wire, and other ordinary supplies are Ann Chuchvara’s materials of choice. Her delicate constructions transform the inconspicuous and the everyday into vast and intricate webs, inspired by nature’s often fleeting splendor. Subtle beauty lost in the everyday is suddenly and extraordinarily brought to life through her use of pattern and repetition.

Initially drawn to ceramics, Chuchvara graduated with a Master of Fine Arts degree from University of Colorado after earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Grand Valley State University. While process itself originally attracted her to ceramics, Chuchvara later discovered that the strength in her work was truly realized when working with more ephemeral-feeling, and less conspicuous materials.

Chuchvara’s work consists of accumulations of sculptural elements, highlighting significance in the insignificant, and calling attention to what is frequently overlooked in the frantic pace of everyday life. Nearly invisible, yet wholly substantial, she pays homage to moments often missed or taken for granted. Chuchvara focuses on the relationship between time and worth, explaining that attention and repetition can transform a common object or a simple activity into something valuable - something extraordinary.

Ann Chuchvara • Statement

My work addresses the delicate connections that bind us to what is no longer tangible and the elements that exist in the periphery of our daily lives. The surfaces that exist during the moments of experience are the devices that help us to hold onto or have access to those moments afterward. Combining repetition and pattern with inconspicuous materials, I attempt to glimpse what is fleeting and to examine the mind's perseverance of holding onto a memory, giving credit to what is often overlooked or forced into the margins.
